Paul Legrand, 42, the widower of the brilliant director Camille, is traveling by TGV from Paris to Cannes to present her posthumously selected film. His producer puts him on the train accompanied by an AI assistant named Orpheus—a program Camille herself used during her lifetime. Orpheus whispers the "correct" lines into Paul’s earpiece, ensuring he doesn't derail the ceremony with his sarcasm and grief.

En route, Julia—a 30-year-old festival press officer who was supposed to meet Paul in Cannes—bursts into his carriage. A lively, sharp, and gradually warming conversation sparks up between them. In Marseille, an elderly couple boards the train with a nervous dog in a carrier; they have been bickering over the size of a suitcase for forty years running.

In Cannes, at the station exit beneath the "SORTIE 24" sign, instead of rushing toward his waiting limousine, Paul stops and hauls the elderly couple’s suitcase up the stairs. Running late, he changes into his tuxedo on the fly—but forgets to change his shoes. On the red carpet, a journalist asks about his "gesture against the dress code"; a security guard silently reaches under a nearby counter to produce a spare pair of shoes ("It’s not a gesture. It’s the prevention of a gesture"), and Paul—wearing borrowed shoes that are slightly too big—ascends the grand staircase of the Palais des Festivals. At the entrance to the auditorium, for the first time all day, he removes his earpiece: "I’ll take it from here."
